By the time you're hearing people talking about the movie in earnest, you'll be finished and just want to keep coming back for more. The shooting is great fun, and the action is so explosive, it's all real enough to be terrifying. It's also fun to watch the movie remind you that in the right hands, it's possible to make you actually care about a film.

This is a good example of why you shouldn't make a movie about an actress who's about to take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a woman who gets knocked up by a gangster. It's good for a few laughs, but what really matters is that Laura Dern's performance as the mute wife of a gangster (Will Arnett) is so affecting, it makes this film look like a mess. The comedy's a lot of laughing at her expense, but in Dern's hands, it's a wonderfully emotional act of atonement and redemption. Fitting, considering what a momentous moment it is for her career.

If there's anything better than a rare 1st-rate performance in a film, it's a rare 1st-rate performance in a movie that feels like it's trying really, really hard to be a rare 1st-rate performance. David Leitch's riveting Atomic Blonde throws in a bunch of stylish action scenes, a couple of poignant characters and some heartfelt moments. It's so over-the-top and over-the-top with a serious over-the-top taste that if you can turn away from the half-dead and semi-naked femme fatales, you'll find a film that's pretty much a wild ride, on the whole.

With Denis Villeneuve directing, Blade Runner 2049 is the best blockbuster in the Star Wars universe. It's a true sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, and it's the best Star Wars movie since the original. Not only does it look and sound awesome, but it's filled with phenomenal performances. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford steal the show, but before they appear they both make two of the best horror movies in recent memory. While the sequel is probably a little too long, it gets the job done. Does it meet the standard set by the original? No, but it's hard to think of a sequel that does.
