Sensory analysis of aerosols. This was performed using a trained panel of trained consumers. The sensory analysis revealed that odour and flavour of the aerosols were not significantly affected by heating. However, the impact on the visual appearance, such as blackening or browning of the liquid, was significant. The odour and flavour analysis of all samples were not conclusive; a panel of trained tasters was used to smell and taste the samples. The taste and smell of e-liquids derived from humectants did not change after heating, but the appearance of blackening was visible to both the trained panel and untrained consumers. The taste and odour of flavours did not change after heating, but blackening was perceived by both the trained panel and untrained consumers, probably because it was more noticeable against the black background. As a result, the odour and flavour of the heated samples were deemed to be different from those of the unheated samples. Hence, heating of e-liquids with humectants can cause blackening and browning of the liquid. This is particularly true when the heated sample is placed in a glass vial to which the e-liquid is to be used. Thus, especially for vials in glass, smoking may pose a health hazard. This is the reason why the EU market authorisation does not include any such heating of liquid nicotine. The same applies to liquid nicotine in cartridges. The presence of metal and silicates may also have an impact on the taste, odour and visual appearance of e-liquids. The results of our study do not show any influence of the heating process on the taste and odour of e-liquids, but it is important to emphasise that our study consisted of only one type of e-liquid. Further studies will be required to analyse other types of e-liquids with more than one type of additive and/or different heating conditions.
The composition of the aerosols that e-cigarette users inhale are affected by a number of factors, including the type of heating, the liquid used and the device selected [75]. For example, e-cigarette users often use e-liquids with high concentrations of nicotine. 827ec27edc
