In 2016, the popular book Introduction to the R Programming Language was updated by the authors to the third edition, which is now available. This new edition provides an authoritative and hands-on tutorial for statistical computing in R. The book covers topics such as data manipulation and analysis, data structures, regression models, graphics, and multivariate and spatial data. It’s divided into six parts: In Part 1, the authors walk through the basics of using R, including installing and installing packages, loading data, and creating and saving a project. In Part 2, they show how to handle data manipulation and analysis, including basic data mining, reshaping, and cleaning. In Part 3, they describe how to use R for quantitative analysis, including regression models, hypothesis tests, and data visualization. In Part 4, they present the essentials of coding and programming in R, including working with numeric and text data, handling missing and irregular data, and programming. In Part 5, they cover graphics in R, including the base graphics library and some of the packages that extend it. In Part 6, they demonstrate how R can be used for multivariate and spatial data analysis.
In the first edition, the authors also introduced the open-source statistical computing language R. They continue to explain the essentials of the language throughout the book, and it’s an important feature of the book as it provides readers with the information they need to start to analyze and visualize data with R. R is a language that developed at Bell Laboratories, and it’s used widely across many areas of science and engineering. It has been ported to many platforms (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and others), and the R Foundation has taken the lead to maintain and improve R. For more information on R, the R Foundation website is a good place to start.
In the beginning of this year, the editors of the Journal of Evaluation in Education announced the launch of the new 2016 Journal of Evaluation in Practice Special Issue on Quantitative Research Methods. The 2016 issue includes a range of articles on using quantitative research methods in education, curriculum and instruction, and policy and practice. This issue is dedicated to presenting best practices and innovative research methods in quantitative education. It will be available for download in the journal’s website at the end of April. 827ec27edc
