The player can call upon Kat's Companions to carry items, push her, and shoot projectiles of various types. Kat's Companions can also grant one another special abilities, increasing their effectiveness in certain situations. Players can access Kat's Companion menu at any time to switch between them, or to give them new abilities. When Kat's energy meter is fully charged, her Companions will upgrade their abilities, gaining new abilities and weapons as they do so.[2][3]

The game's story takes place in Hekseville, a sprawling city-like environment. Originally a manufacturing center for a glacier-powered power plant, Hekseville has become a bustling metropolis due to the destruction of the plant. Kat and other residents work to fix a cityscape riddled with environmental hazards and collapsing buildings as they attempt to discover the source of a mysterious power that threatens the city and the world.[3][4]
