Things I learned from this documentary:
Les Rallizes Dnus are the most insufferable band in the world.
Califone are possibly the best band in the world, and I will fight anyone who disagrees.
The original version of “Somethin’ I Got” is amazing, but the version featured in this film is even better than that.
And then, I had a realization: I had just watched a documentary about the best band in the world. I had just seen all that I needed to see. I felt excited for the first time in days, like I was finally at the right place in time.
I remember this documentary was done by the same people who did Contagion and it had a similar effect on me. I was in a serious mood that day and I found myself asking, “What would the world be like if we could live in a time where we knew nothing about the world?”
The Orchids’ cover of “Hurt” by The Rolling Stones is better than the Stones’ original. This is true of “I Will Always Love You,” the Byrds’ original of which the Orchids’ cover is the best. The Orchids’ version of “Alone Again Or,” the original of which is much more conventional and mainstream, is better than either of the two covers of “Alone Again Or.”
At least, in comparison to all the other covers of the top 40 songs of all time. And it’s not even the best cover of the Orchids’ music. “Alive” actually sounds better than most of Califone’s original songs.
