"The Pacific was the most important theater of World War II on the western half of the globe, but was one of the last to be won by the Allies. The Allied offensive against Japan began in late 1944 when a fleet of Allied warships, including the atomic bomb-carrying USS Indianapolis, found themselves beached on a small tropical island in the Marshall Islands. Although the Japanese had held the islands since 1942, the majority of the navy that fought such a costly campaign on these islands were annihilated by the time the United States invaded the Marshalls in January of 1945. Over the course of that month, the American forces, aided by the Japanese navy, forced every US airfield within striking distance of the Japanese home islands and wiped out enemy sea and air power. By the spring of 1945, U.S. forces had captured the Japanese home islands and were headquartered on one of them, the largest one. These Allied forces were to eventually encircle that island with another wave of operation. In mid-April 1945, the Allied destroyers USS Rodgers and USS Parrott sank the Japanese submarine I-174 there.
