In the next two chapters, the author provides a detailed review of the biological clock. This allows the reader to understand in depth the methods used in the various physiological processes under discussion, which inevitably require some individual attention. For example, those who find that chapter interesting will have no difficulty at all in the remaining chapters, because they have a thorough grasp of the chemistry, biochemistry and physiology that are necessary to understand some aspects of clock functioning.
The next 3 chapters deal with circadian rhythms in sociobiology. Chapter 4 starts with a discussion on the relationship between the circadian clock and social behavior in Drosophila, with a comparison of the approach of the author with that of Chronobiology. While it contains some intriguing topics, the discussion is limited to Drosophila and does not consider other aspects of circadian biology of other organisms. Nor does it delve into the many potential applications of a better understanding of circadian biology in humans. So, I cannot recommend chapter 4 for this course.
Chapter 5 is a fascinating discussion on the circadian firing of the pacemaker neurons in Drosophila. This is a topic that was not discussed in any of the courses offered at my university to date. I would suggest to some readers this chapter to start with, and find more information in the subsequent chapters on how these neuronal processes are regulated.
